As October comes to a close, I want to take a moment to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the many lives affected by this serious issue. Each statistic unveils a personal story of sorrow, resilience, but ultimately empowerment.
Today, I want to shine a light on the psychological effects of domestic abuse and share how survivors can cultivate strength, healing and purpose through health and wellness.
Understanding the Impact of Domestic Violence on Mental Health
Domestic violence does more than leave physical injuries; it also takes a substantial toll on mental health. Survivors frequently face challenges such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. These emotional struggles can interfere with daily life and slow recovery efforts.
Research shows that nearly 70% of domestic abuse survivors experience PTSD at some point after leaving an abusive relationship. Survivors may also face escalating anxiety; studies indicate that 29% experience severe anxiety that disrupts their daily functions. Recognizing these effects is essential for survivors on their path to reclaiming their lives and identities.

While grappling with these mental health challenges can feel overwhelming, it's crucial to understand that these feelings are valid and that healing is possible.
My Journey from Surviving to Thriving
As a survivor of domestic violence, I know firsthand the struggles and victories that shape this journey. Leaving my abusive relationship was one of the hardest decisions I ever made, but it opened a new path filled with possibility and self-discovery.
Through therapy, I began to peel back layers of trauma, some rooted in childhood experiences. Each session brought revelations that helped me understand how my past influenced my present. Realizing that asking for help was not a sign of weakness, but a vital part of healing, transformed my outlook. I began to understand why I not only gravitated towards the partners I had in the past but why I ignored red flags in the first place. I finally stopped blaming myself for the way they treated me. It was like I could finally breathe fully for the first time. This self-discovery showed me that I chose what felt familiar not what I thought I deserved.
Confronting and processing my trauma liberated me. With each therapy session, I chipped away at the walls I built, allowing light and hope to enter. This transformative journey inspired me to create The Single Chronicles, a podcast I created to vent and heal as a newly single person over 30 at the time.

The podcast poked fun at the cliche tropes of being single but aimed at supporting others as they navigate similar healing paths. I would close out each episode with the phrase, "Be Awesome, Be You, But Above All Else, Love Yourself". Long story short... it inspired the motto and logo of what is now Love Yourself Wellness—a fitness & wellness initiative.
But the message of healing & finding strength and triumph over trauma remains as impactful as ever.

Empowerment Through Healing
The healing process is challenging, yet it can also lead to profound empowerment. Therapy taught me the foundational importance of self-care and self-love—practices that are vital for anyone recovering from trauma. Which meant setting boundaries with others in order to focus on my business and my well-being. As my business and my podcast following grew. I knew that I had to keep going not just for clients and listeners but myself. The more I helped others, the more I poured into myself and before I knew it, I was genuinely happy.
As I continued to nurture myself, my self-esteem and confidence grew. I replaced self-criticism with self-compassion. This mindset shift was crucial in turning my pain into purpose. While recovering is rarely a straightforward path, each milestone deserves recognition and celebration.
Every step I took marked a testament to my strength and resilience, revealing my capacity to build a loving relationship with myself. This newfound empowerment fueled my desire to help others in their healing journey. I used every opportunity to raise funds and awareness to abuse causes and non-profits. I attended rallies, walks, webinars, hosted events and gathered what information I could. I even met a fellow Zumba Instructor and abuse survivor who had in the process had opened a safe haven for abused women. Finding my "coven" of survivors not only grew but it had begun to flourish.

Creating Love Yourself Wellness
Love Yourself Wellness emerged from my personal journey of healing. As I mentioned before, it shaped me into the person I am today. I discovered a deep sense of purpose in guiding others through their experiences, helping them embrace self-love and creating safe spaces for physical and emotional expression.
At Love Yourself Wellness, we offer vital resources and support for all women and those who are non-binary as well. Our mission is to uplift, empower, and advocate for those on their fitness and healing journeys. We explore various healing modalities, focusing on both mental and physical wellness.
Healing is deeply personal; what helps one individual may not resonate with another. Yet, by sharing stories, resources, and practical tips, we can build a supportive community that nurtures growth and resilience.
Self-Care and Self-Love Practices
Navigating the complexities of healing can be daunting, but implementing self-care and self-love practices significantly enhances mental health. Here are a few practical tips to weave into your daily routine:
Mindfulness and Meditation: Integrating mindfulness into your life can help center your thoughts and reduce anxiety. Consider setting aside just 5-10 minutes each day for meditation or deep breathing exercises.
Physical Activity: Engaging in physical exercise releases endorphins that can brighten your mood. Whether going for a walk, practicing yoga, or dancing, find activities that bring you joy.
Journaling: Writing your thoughts and feelings is cathartic and allows you to process emotions in a safe, controlled environment.
Connect with Supportive People: Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and encourage you. Having a solid support network plays a vital role in the healing process.
Seek Professional Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist or counselor. Professional guidance is a powerful tool in your healing journey.
Incorporating these practices lays a stronger foundation for mental health and well-being.
